Water retention for people and nature
Together with lead partner LBV and Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz – Veldensteiner Forst e.V., we develop and implement nature-based water retention measures in Czech and Bavarian landscapes.
The project is co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Interreg Bavaria–Czechia 2021–2027 programme.

About the project
The project brings Czech and Bavarian partners together to restore the landscape's water regime. Four living labs will test nature-based measures to address drought and flooding, and share lessons for their use in other municipalities.
Apolo Life coordinates two Czech living labs in the Kouba (Chamb) and Úhlava catchments, where measures are designed on the basis of landscape planning studies. Together with LBV, it engages and trains volunteer stream stewards and connects municipalities, landowners and experts in a cross-border network for long-term landscape management.
Objectives
- Support water retention and restore the landscape's natural water regime.
- Identify suitable sites and develop nature-based measures tailored to the area's needs.
- Bring together specialist expertise and local knowledge on both sides of the border and share experience.
Expected results
Technical evidence and proposed measures for selected sites, an assessment of their feasibility, and cooperation between partners in planning and implementation.
We will publish completed outputs and results here as the project progresses.
Programme and partners
Lead partner LBV – Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern e.V. coordinates the project and measures in the two Bavarian living labs. Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz – Veldensteiner Forst e.V. provides local coordination in Ahorntal, fieldwork, technical support for implementation and public engagement.
